The Carnegie /Scott O'Dell/Newbery Medal

The Carnegie Medal named in memory of the great philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie.　Carnegie set up more than 2800 libraries. The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book written in English for children and young people.
The Newbery Medal was the first Junior literature Medal named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually to Children to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Scott O'Dell established this award to encourage other writers--particularly new authors--to focus on historical fiction. He hoped in this way to increase the interest of young readers in the historical background.
